Two of UD’s Flop Four participated in last night’s Tip-Off Marathon on ESPN. Juwan Staten, the gem of Brian Gregory’s final recruiting class at UD, and his West Virginia squad took on Gonzaga in Spokane. His old running mate, Brandon Spearman, now at Hawaii, played against Houston Baptist at 4am EST. Staten finished scoreless in 34 minutes and WVU went down hard, 84-50 (Aaric Murray had 14 points and 3 blocks, so good for him?). Spearman fared better, tallying 15 points in Hawaii’s thirteen point victory.
After hearing about Staten for what seemed like a decade before he actually enrolled at UD, I still have a vested interest in how his situation will turn out. Spearman less so.
Speaking of Staten fandom, here is a priceless tweet from UD’s own Norm Grevey:
Does this dumb hick realize that Staten just played THE FIRST GAME OF HIS SOPHOMORE SEASON? Grevey is welcome to his own opinion, not his own facts. Staten led the A10 in assists and was named to the conference’s All-Freshmen Team. Not sure what else he was supposed to do during his first year in a Flyer uniform. Respect reality, Norm, the rest of the world is passing you by.
As we can see, the duo’s departure was one of the more polarizing episodes in recent Dayton basketball history (Brian Gregory’s legacy and Willie’s light-up jacket rank just slightly ahead in terms of a dividing line among the Flyer Faithful™). So now that the smoke has cleared, and an entire basketball season has passed, how do Flyer fans feel about our former cagers?[polldaddy poll=6686471]
