Basketball polls are completely meaningless, no one disputes this. In a sport where the champion is decided over three weeks in a 64-ish team playoff, where you are ranked in an arbitrary poll means next to nothing.
Except to programs like Dayton. For UD, a ranking next to its name is an advertisement, it’s exposure, it is validation. It also helps in our ongoing slapfight with the NEW Big East.
I know you are going to ask, so here it is: the last time UD was ranked was in November, 2009. The Flyers reached up as far as 18 in the AP before tumbling back down to reality. That particular team was ranked 21 in the preseason and moved up after beating Creighton in its opener. A 1-2 performance in the Puerto Rico Tipoff yanked the Flyers from the poll in min-November.
