Well, we all saw why it was essential to clear Kendall Pollard for tonight’s game against St. Joseph’s. The sophomore forward was almost flawless, save from the charity stripe, scoring a team-high 22 points and pulling down 8 rebounds.
Dyshawn Pierre joined the 1,000 point club, racking up another double-double in what will surely be the greatest career any Canadian has had in a UD basketball uniform. Pierre chipped in 15 points, including a huge three that tied the game up at 58, and grabbed a game-high 10 boards.
The team never seemed to lack as much depth as it did tonight, the five starters going for 183 minutes out of a possible 200 against the Hawks, as I don’t really recall seeing much of the Wehrli Bird or DURRELL Davis (Pollard didn’t just suit up, he put on the hardhat and logged 37 minutes of court time).
I know we harp on this fact, but these were the types of late-season games UD used to piss away that would ultimately result in barely missed NCAA bids. Not this season, at least so far. The Flyers went 6-1 in February last year, they were a combined 20-17 the five seasons before that. Avoiding a swoon during the final stretch of the schedule has always been crucial to UD’s success. It appears that this team is fortunately avoiding the pitfalls that plagued so many Flyer squads before them.
@BlackburnReview I find myself watching this dumb bird wave his arms the whole game more than I do the actual game

Tonight’s victory marks the seventh time in the past eight seasons in which Dayton has won at least twenty games in a season. A remarkable feat for a team that looked dead in the water just two months ago. UD also sealed up the school’s tenth conference win, sending UD into a first place tie with VCU with just five games remaining on the docket.
UD faces Duquesne on the road in Pittsburgh in less than 40 hours. I don’t know how gassed a group of kids can be after sweating out a close one tonight, I just assume the game against the Dukes won’t be a cakewalk.
