U. Dayton BasketballDayton, Less Worse Than Fordham

12642885_10153928286742372_518363333678308673_nThere are wins and then there are “wins.” A victory over Fordham is the latter. You simply hope no one gets hurt and leave with a victory. A win doesn’t register a blip, a loss is a scarlet letter you carry around forever. Fortunately, Dayton was able to overcome a rather sluggish performance and left the Bronx with a 64-50 victory. The win improves UD’s record to 16-3 on the season, 6-1 in league play.

Fordham was able to enforce their prison rules, turning the Dayton offense over fifteen times during the contest. However, the Rams couldn’t turn those miscues into points, scoring just thirteen points on Flyer turnovers. Fordham, already an average at best offensive team, needs every opportunity it can manufacture. The Rams, notwithstanding their points off Dayton’s blunders, was almost non-existent offensively against the Flyers. Fordham shot 37% from the floor, just 20% from behind the arc. That’s the type of performance that would put any team behind the eight ball, the type of production that simply won’t allow to keep pace with a team like Dayton.

Charles Cooke was otherworldly against the Rams. Dayton’s free agent signing scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-12 shooting, 4-of-6 from behind the arc. The junior wing grabbed six boards and added three steals to lead the Flyers to victory. Scoochie Smith was the only other UD player worth his salt offensively. Smith, returning to his hometown, connected on 3-of-4 from deep and finished with 14 points on the night.

Dyshawn Pierre was like a drunken cowboy, firing shots blindly into the night. The team’s lone senior shot just 25% from the field, but did manage to pull down nine rebounds against the Rams. Kendall Pollard played like a freshman, almost invisible to the outside world. UD’s power forward has had a few disappearing acts already this season, the Flyers, luckily, cold afford his absence today.

Dayton’s performance today probably wouldn’t have been enough to beat most of the conference. But this is Fordham, and an underwhelming display against the Rams was fortuitously more than enough today. In a manner of speaking, UD’s subpar output was fortunate, saving what could be their worst showing of the season for a team that was not even able to overcome Dayton’s weakest shot to date.

Again, Dayton shot 41% from the floor, converted only 38% of their threes and turned the ball over fifteen times. On your average day, the Flyers probably fight to stay within shouting distance of their opponent. Against Fordham however, this was good enough to rack up a double-digit victory. This is surely a good example of how much separates a program like Fordham from a program like UD’s at this point. Feel good for Dayton, feel nothing but despondency for the Rams.

The Flyers return home for two games next week. A game against our…rivals, Saint Louis (the Arch-Baron Cup is once again on the line) and a chance to redeem ourselves against La Salle this Saturday. The Flyers have an excellent chance of wrapping up January with 18 wins on the ledger, facing a situation where nothing but seeding will hopefully be one the line.

That was one of the best games I’ve ever watched in DVR 8x during halftime of NFL playoff game. The ball movement in 8x is impressive. On to SLU.

The A10 is so fucking pathetic. Archie needs to get the fuck out now. I’m not sure which was worse – the 200 Fordham fans who showed up to watch that shit show or the 400 Dayton fans who were there to support their mid-major flyers. Dayton players can’t even fake the enthusiasm anymore — they all know Archie lied to them about how the A10 is major college bball. Oh and for those who keep wondering whats “wrong” with scoochie — hes gone as soon as this season is over — he hates Dayton

You’re an idiot. The A10 is… the A10. It’s not the B1G and it’s not the Horizon. It is what it is – a mid-major conference. I can’t stand douchebags who put it down because they don’t understand college basketball. As far as Scoochie, just where is it you think he’s going? I’m sure you were just drunk when and wrote this right before vomiting on your mothers couch or down your girlfriends panties (or both) so no harm-no foul, but try to manage your consumption next time.

I could have sworn we were playing at the Frericks Center when I turned the game on.

I could have sworn it was the local YMCA where Swampy schools shirtless boys with his old school mid range jumper.

Jesus, Blackburn. Who shit in your cereal? This is a pretty weak recap. A Sunday afternoon conference road win? Yeah, I’ll take it. These bullshit high school gyms are getting old though.

There was football on at the same time, I’m surprised the game was watched or a recap given.

I’m not sure that shooting 38% from three is something to complain about. That two point shooting was a real dog, though.

Baby D has been flat out bad. 0-3 from the floor and 3 TOs. Brutal.

the crazy thing is this is probably the best team fordham has had in 10 years, no? (going off memory, maybe someone can shame me with real info). I’m just saying they’re gonna win like 5 games in conference and not finish last so…right direction?

you should do an article on the potential arena upgrades… Reading the UDPride page on it and I am starting to think I went to a skewl full of commies.

Charles Cooke is one of the top 5 SGs at UD in the past twenty years. My list from 5 to 1 is:
We never see another pure stroke like 33 again.
