RecapU. Dayton BasketballTECHnical Analysis

There’s nothing like mama’s home cookin’ when you’re a little under the weather, so a home game against a (slightly) inferior opponent is just what our boys needed after this past weekend. After dropping to a record of 3-4 (the worst for Dayton hoops in over a decade), Tennessee Technological University came into the Sweater Centre and graciously allowed us to have a bit of a confidence booster this evening. Led by – you guessed it – DURRELL and Josh, the pregame prediction by Blackburn miraculously held true and the good guys pulled out a 79-66 victory.

Before we get into the game, I’d like to give a shout out to my man wearing the blue this evening:

Crutcher got his first official start at Dayton Arena tonight, which re-confirmed the John Crosby era is all but over. Like taking your significant other home to meet the parents for the first time, it gets real once you’re introduced on home court. And right on cue with the rest of this season’s fun surprises, he tweaked his leg in the first few minutes and headed to the bench, letting Crosby take over for a few minutes while he took a ride on the stationary bike. DURRELL and Crosby scored the first points before we began our nightly ritual of playing like ass for 5 minutes, allowing Tech to take an 11-6 lead. Thankfully the home crowd, led by a sea of red sweaters due to finals week, lit a fire under their asses which led to a 15-0 Flyers run. We shot just under 54% from the field and held Tennessee Tech to a whopping 32%, and smoked them 22-10 in the paint. Dayton ran into the tunnel at halftime up 32-24.

I like Jordan Davis. A lot. My man racked up 14 points this evening and went 4-6 from downtown. DURRELL and Cunningham were the only ones to out score him, with 19 and 16 respective points. Josh also chipped in 10 boards, which is just another day at the office as far as he’s concerned.

Our biggest lead tonight was 14 points with just over 3 minutes left in the game. We’ve already acknowledged this multiple times but I’ll say it again: our defense continues to be one giant head scratch. On the defensive end, all 5 guys are constantly moving their feet, yet aren’t going anywhere or stopping the opposing team from scoring easy buckets. One thing’s for sure: they damn well aren’t trying to get into any passing lanes. One would assume this will improve as the season goes on, but it will drive most of us absolutely insane for the time being. We finished the game nailing just 8 of 23 from behind the arch, with Tech going 10 of 24. What a marvelous feeling indeed to get a W against a non-MAC team!

Some other notes and observations:

  • Kostas behaved himself for almost the entire first half without a foul. That’s one obvious key to us having any success at all this season. He finished with a double-double.
  • A secret prize will be awarded to anyone who finds out (or correctly guesses in the comments) what is actually ailing X Man. Get outta my face with “back spasms” after a couple days.
  • Josh went 6-6 from the floor. I like when Josh goes 6-6 from the floor.
  • Landers scored 14 tonight. Dare I say the kid is growing up right before our eyes?
  • We had 17 turnovers. Sadly this is a BIG improvement from past games, but an improvement nonetheless.
  • I’m not totally sold on this year’s batch of Great Lakes Christmas Ale yet.
  • Tonight was the first of three straight home games, the next being this Saturday at 3pm ET vs. Penn (a backup school for most Dayton kids).

Back to .500, folks. Stay normal, stay LOWD, and we’ll see y’all Saturday.

(As always, thanks to David Jablonski and that goon Allaire for the images/videos)

I think this Jordan “Davis” has a chance to be the “best Davis” to play for the Flyers since “Kyle”

Fuck Great Lakes Christmas Ale. Do you like the flavor of candles? No? Then you you should drink one of the other fat superior beers Great Lakes makes.
