As was reported earlier today, George Mason will be added to the Atlantic Ten effective July 1st, 2013.

George Mason is heading to the Atlantic 10.

The league will lose Xavier and Butler next season to the new Big East, will also see Temple depart for the old Big East, and could also watch Dayton and Saint Louis bolt the following season.

Sources told CBSSports.com that George Mason and the A-10 will make a dual announcement on Monday.

Mason will be the 13th team in the league, setting up a natural rivalry with George Washington, VCU and Richmond.

georgemasonwinslossesThe Patriots haven’t been able to build off their 2006 Final Four run in the same fashion as VCU or Butler. Which isn’t to say the program has fallen completely off the rails, GMU has been very competitive since their historic tournament run.

What this move means in regards to the future of the league is debatable. Is McGlade anticipating both SLU and UD leaving the conference next season? Does she simply want to add as much quality as she can given the current basketball landscape? No one knows for sure, but it is an indication that the realignment shifts will be a continuous process over the next few seasons. Where Dayton falls in all of this remains to be seen. (Sidenote: We now have Paul Hewitt coaching in the league, this will be entertaining)
