Charleston Chewed

robersondunkWoeful. That’s the only word to describe Dayton’s offensive performance this afternoon. After treading water when Kevin Dillard left the game with foul trouble early in the first half, the Flyers were dominated in the second frame – resulting in a Colorado ten point victory, 67-57.

The Buffs were the more aggressive team in the second half, repeatedly dumping the ball down to their bigs for easy buckets and easy whistles on UD. The game really opened up when Dayton started collapsing on Andre Roberson and Josh Scott, and the Colorado pair responded by kicking the ball out quickly for wide-open looks from three. Askia Booker hit a pair, and Xavier Johnson connected on one, during the Buffs’ 13-0 run in the second half. Colorado got to the line and hit their open shots, which was the difference in the game.

The Flyers shot just 33% from the floor, a scant 24% from the three-point line. Like the BG days, UD doesn’t seem to have anyone who can create their own shot right now. Every shot seemed forced and easy looks were hard to come by. For all the good things we can say about Dillard, and there are plenty, his offensive production has been lackluster at best in the early going. To be fair, there wasn’t a single standout on the offensive end.

On the plus side, I was impressed with Dayton’s rebounding. Going into the game, I felt like Colorado had a decided advantage on the boards, yet UD was able to not only hold its own, but actually outrebounded the Buffaloes 36-34. Devin Oliver, who shot just 1-for-8 on the day, managed to pull down 12 boards in the losing effort.

The best aspect of these early season tournaments is that you wipe the slate clean and turn the page to the next game immediately. The Flyers will likely take on Boston College at 2:30 pm tomorrow. Dress accordingly.
