We are going to have to pin this one squarely on the La Salle Explorers, as they were the suckiest sucks that ever sucked. Dayton was sputtering offensively tonight, particularly in the first half, and Dr. John’s team was content to simply roll over and let the Flyers have the game. Although the Explorers were able to slow Dayton’s pace, the Flyers had just 61 possessions (second lowest on the season, UD had 60 against Fordham), they could not capitalize on the scoreboard. La Salle shot just 40% on the night, barely got to the stripe and were out-rebounded by Miller’s midgets. You don’t come into the Sweater Centre with that type of performance and leave with your pride.
The Flyers were fortunate to get the W, as Jordan Sibert, the team’s most consistent offensive threat this season, was cold from the floor — connecting on only two of his ten shots. UD can attribute tonight’s victory to Scoochie Smith and Dyshawn Pierre. The duo combined for 32 points, 7 assists (Pierre added a game-high 14 boards) and were the difference in the second half as the Flyers pulled away, 61-50. The win, UD’s seventh in a row, brings Dayton to 14-2 on the season, a perfect 4-0 in league play.
Although this isn’t the type of performance that inspires further confidence, a win is a win. Particularly when it comes during conference play. Dayton slogged for 40 minutes and was still able to come out with an eleven point triumph. Now the Gem City turns its attention to this weekend’s opponent, Saint Louis. Apparently the Billikens are now our biggest rivals or something. #BeatSLUWeek?
