This much is clear, against a team like Saint Louis, UD is going to need more than one guy to carry the load. Outside of Jordan Siebert, no one stepped up offensively for the Flyers on Saturday afternoon. Devin Oliver and Vee Sanford went a combined 2-of-20 from the field. 2-of-20.
Dayton shot just 30.6% from the floor, a season-low (and also the lowest percentage of Archie’s reign), and 29% from three-point land. That’s not gonna get it done against Fordham, and it certainly isn’t enough to take down a team like Saint Louis.
Oliver in particular had a bad case of the saddies after the game:
[quote_box_center]The scene was quite a bit different after this meltdown. With a few minutes left in the game, Oliver was briefly on the bench, where he pulled his jersey top over his face in disappointment. In the postgame handshake line he hung his head and even the Saint Louis coaches consoled him. Twice they wrapped an arm around his head and whispered to him. Afterward Oliver declined comment and sought out his family.[/quote_box_center]
If any player is allowed to have a bed-shitter, it’s Devin Oliver. He will have more good days than bad over the next two months.
Obviously losing the league opener puts some pressure on UD to get it going quickly. The Flyers head to Fordham on Wednesday and then depart to Richmond for a game on Saturday. Two wins are recommended.
