The Bell Tolls for UD

"This is the part where I go off for the last time this year. The thoughts have to leave my head for me to move on back to real life.

I want to be the guy that hands these seniors their diplomas. I have to make sure they're really out of eligibility. Kurt and London are summer flings. Fine for what they are, and there were those few times where she really used her tongue well, but come late August it's time to move on and she disappears from your mind. Marcus was great for a while, but turned crazy. Maybe down the road the fond memories will come back. Mickey Perry was the fat friend, just always there for no apparent reason. Lowery, well, yeah. He played.

What a disappointing senior class.

I really hope BG is just punting this season with the way he's coaching. I know he's a system guy, but there's a difference between sticking to the system and just watching the old lady walk out in front of the bus. I think the worst part for me is the fact that he's taking no responsibility in the press (Doog). Maybe Doog's just not asking the questions the Trucker wants asked (your job now Secaur).

Wait till next year!!!!

I actually think next year will be better than this one, if for no other reason than lowered expectations. I've seen Staten many times, and he's just that damn good. Josh Parker was pretty good at Drake. Between (likely) progression from Benson, Paul Willie, Kavanaugh, a straight beast mode CJ and the rest of the freshmen I think the team will be far more talented. If, and it's a BIG IF, BG can tweak the system to match the smaller, more guard oriented roster I think the Flyers can be pretty damn good. If this year has taught me anything, it's that talent simply matters more than age and experience.

I'm sitting the next couple weeks out. I'll watch, but I won't care about the result. When Xavier rolls Richmond on Saturday it will make any potential win over the Spiders mean far less, so the season all comes down to AC. That's when I'll care again."

Is that (the R.I.P tombstone) chris wright NBA D-league hopes or UD's NIT hopes?

02.24.2010 | Unregistered Commenterkremer

adam, doing the same. stayed away from the game. glad i did after seeing the result

did catch the 2nd half of the Xavier-SLU game. Don't get me wrong, I hate Xavier, but that was entertaining shit. Those two teams played with poise and used their strengths well. eggsavier hit some circus shots and willie reed missed about a dozen free throws, but those fuckers from Cincy just know what it takes to win on the road. They roll the A10 annually and UD can never figure out how to do that and i don't like it

Watched that game, too Vern. I agree, taking away Xavier and Majerus hatred, those teams are a joy to watch for basketball fans. That game actually looked exactly like the UD/SLU game for a while. Xavier was taking and missing bad shots with the lead and SLU stormed back. Mitchell even had a wide open three to give SLU the lead but missed.

After the Sweet 16, if you want me to come up and open Gregory's nose with a leather Wilson at point blank range, give me a calll.
As much as I like having him as my Wyle E. Coyote, I figure I still owe the UD fans for boinking Wes Coffee.

02.24.2010 | Unregistered CommenterChris Mack

@Chris Mack: I just want to know ... what's the secret? How can your program lose so much from last year's team and yet not miss a beat? Meanwhile, UD has 10 of its top 11 players from last year back in the fold and is fortunate to be 7-6 in the conference. Is it possible that in a year where UD was supposed to bridge the gap, X somehow increased it?

Seriously, if you are a UD fan and are going to make disparaging remarks about Xavier, just please include the caveat that their program is far superior in almost every conceivable facet. They've earned that consideration.

02.24.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

here's a fun little nugget: 13 points in the half is the lowest total for the team since WWII.

ho-lee FUCK

02.25.2010 | Unregistered Commentersancho

AND 41 is the second lowest point total for the team since '96-'97 when UD lost to G-Dubs 59-38.

However they scored 15 in the first half of that game...

02.25.2010 | Unregistered Commentersancho

OOO! my favorite stat so far!

the three lowest field goal percentages (since '96) have come in the past two years. 20.1% against fordham this year, 22.2% against kansas last year, and 26.3% against (guess who!) temple this year.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered Commentersancho

Mr. Blackburn I must say that was a perfect way to put it, exp the grandmother walking infront of the bus hahaha.........I told ya therewas going to be a line up change up it didn't work that well, exp because kurt was 1-8 shooting, CJ barely got to touch the ball when he was in, and we couldn't finish at all just to start, but what ever hopefully we finish up the season well and don't completely crap our pants

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Smith

I was thinking about this yesterday. While this is probably Dayton's most talented team in my lifetime, they are also probably the most unlikable team in my lifetime. There is CJ and London and that's about it.

Like Blackburn said...this team sure talks a lot.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterDon Donoher

Okay a couple of questions.....

Why the hell did Rob Lowery get 9 more minutes than London? He was fucking horrible. (Just like NM, just like at Xavier, just like St. Joe's.......)

In a game where making a shot was akin to scoring a touchdown, why did our most offensive minded big man, Josh Benson, only get 3 minutes?

Chris Johnson (arguably our best player) shot 4 three's and zero 2 pointers. A) why the hell did he only get 4 shots? and B) why is he shooting only 3's?

Why the hell is Rob Lowery allowed to shoot? He was 0-7 going into that last stretch when he made two threes. Some of his shots are just horrible. There were two straight possessions where he took shots within the first 10 seconds of the shot clock, just horrible shots, and it didn't seem like BG gave two shits about it.

After watching this team last night, I think this team has REGRESSED!!! I used to have a coach who always said, a team always either gets better or they get worse, it is impossible to stay stagnant. In my opinion, this team looks worse.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDaddy D

Regression? This team is getting worse? A Brian Gregory team playing its worst basketball heading into March? Nooooooo, these things are inconceivable to me.

You guys worry too much. It's gonna be fine. Remember, WE PLAY OUR BEST WHEN OUR BACKS ARE UP AGAINST THE WALL!!!

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterSecaur

so... ESPN guy just said he still thinks we're in...

is the bubble really that weak or did they get a hold of some grade a freebase coke???

02.25.2010 | Unregistered Commentersancho

@ daddy d, all your points go towards bad coaching. when a coach is completely inept at figuring out how to run an offense, its get to the lane and if you cant do that, hoist up 3's. this is the most disgusted i have been w/ this team and this coach in a while. good job going 5-6 in your last 11 games bg, so happy he has 5 years left, oh wait, no im not

02.25.2010 | Unregistered Commenterrosemasw

The post was good, and I do agree with most of what you said. However, why is there all this jock sniffing for CJ? He is a really good player, but if he is so great that everyone thinks he is, why does he vanish every once in awhile? As for him taking shots, a large percentage of them come from put backs. He is a beast at O-boards. I am personally sick of watching him take 3's while fading away.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterGhetto Shopper

@ Sancho: That is absurd. I thought before this game that if they went 3-1 down the stretch they would make it. However, after that game last night, winning at Richmond is so outlandish a statement that anyone even remotely predicting that should be sent to a North Korean work camp.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDaddy D

Well it was Gottleib making the prediction...

Is this what happens when you enter the season ranked??? The media types are so proud they don't want to admit they were completely wrong about a team that got incredibly lucky at many points last season so they are trying like hell to make us sound good?

The funniest part about Gottleib's prediction is that it came

Thankfully I only saw the 2nd half of that game. Miiiiiserable. I know BG is a system guy blah blah blah, but good coaches have core values they stick with and adjust their system to the strength of their team that year. If I'm BG this offseason, I'm watching tons of Marquette tape from the '08-'09 season when they had McNeal, James, Matthews and any Villanova tape from the past 3 seasons. We should be playing a similar style next season just with players lest talented than what I've listed above.

@Daddy D-Rob got a few more minutes than London b/c Temple was one the teams smart enough to lay 4 feet off London. Rob would have been a nice answer last season, but this year he fell in love with the dribble. How many times have we seen him driblle back and forth between his legs for three straight seconds going nowhere?

I got off the subway this morning and no joke there was a dude in a high school letterman jacket with Flight Club written on the back. I looked closely to make sure it wasn't Chuck Little. It wasn't. This guy didn't have a Dinosaur head. It made me think about how last nights game was so the opposite of swag. And the answer came to me. "We" really need to get our swag back and then we'll really turn it on.

I'll be on the floor Senior Night with a big fucking bouquet of flowers for Mickey. Get the F outta here Philip.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDirty Sanchez

My post was so long I forgot to include this. If I were Searcy, I would be so pissed right now. Fine let Kurt keep his starting streak going, but I think it was Blackburn that said it best-Kurt should take some of his intangibles over next to Billy Schmidt. Searcy has been playing some of his best basketball as of late and then he doesn't see the floor. 9 minutes in a game as craptastic as last nights is unacceptable. If he weren't going to be a Senior next year, maybe he would think about transfering.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTweeds

UD FLYERS HAVE 7 SENIORS. KH,LW,MJ,RL,MP,DF,LH. FIVE PLAY THE PROBLEM WITH THE TEAM IS THAT BEHIND CLOSED DOORS THEY GET NO RESPECT. IF YOU PLAY KH ALL GAMES PLAY MJ ALL GAMES. RL IS NOT THE SAME PLAYER HE WAS LAST YEAR. YOU CAN NOT GET BACK 10 MONTHS EACH PLAY IN THE GAME.LW HAS BEEN PLAYING WELL BUT HE IS PULL FROM THE GAME AT THE WRONG TIME SOMETIME. MP JUST NEED TO GET MORE SHOT UP. THIS IS THE SAME TEAM THAT WENT TO THE NCAA LAST YEAR. EXCEPT FOR CL. YOU DONT PUT CJ OVER MJ OR ANY OTHER SENIOR. AND CJ IS A GOOD PLAYER IT IS RESPECT. PW OVER OVER A SENIOR. IT IS RESPECT. IF YOU REMEMBER WHO PLAYED LAST YEAR AFTER RL WAS HURT. IN THE NCAA LAST YEAR WHO PLAYED. BUT THIS YEAR YOU DONT RESPECT THE SENIORS. MJ SEE, MP SEE, LW SEE, RL IS PLAYING TOO MANY MIN. UD HAVE THE WRONG PLAYERS ON THE FLOOR AT THE WRONG TIME. HOW DO YOU THINK MJ FEEL WHEN YOU PLAY PW OVER HIM BECAUSE HE IS NOT PLAYING WELL. THERE HAVE BEEN GAME KH HAS NOT PLAYED WELL BUT HE STARTS. RESPECT. ONE BIG PROBLEM LET THEM USE THEIR SKILL IF YOUR COACH DONT BELIEVE IN YOU. YOU ARE IN PROBLEM.

@Shits - that is ridiculous. Swampy is the perfect example of the blue-haired red sweater. I wonder if he'll enlighten us as to how BG's cock tastes.
