Rumor Du Jour

Get me away, I'm dyingLet me state emphatically, I am not addressing the veracity of this e-mail. This rumor been floating around since the DePaul job opened up. Just food for thought:

Ok – word I just got from someone pretty into UD athletics is that Gregory is gone – deal is sealed with DePaul…even better news...We will get one of duke’s asst coaches – with the agreement of a ud /duke game on the schedule in 2 years.

Again, file this info under dangerous rumor for now. This email is coming from the same source that tipped me off to the Stevie Thomas transfer days before it appeared anywhere. When I asked whether or not this rumor has legs, the source said, "I really don't know." So, yeah, grain of salt.

This, by the way, is what happens when the season implodes -- sites like ours turn into College Basketball TMZ.

If we hire Wojo I quit.

For the record, I think this rumor first appeared on either Pride or Flyer Hoops a while back.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Yup, it's been around for a bit now--its time to get "speculative."

Agreed with Wojo. OR Collins, or anyone tied with Duke.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

Who knows... maybe the more the fanbase talks about it, the more likely it is to happen!

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterKingo

As a Mizzou fan as well, I've already been down the Duke assistant road once and that didn't work out so well. That family togetherness BS doesn't work as well when Coach K isn't around. We've got to get our current recruiting class on campus as well.

@Blackburn-Did you hear this rumor straight from someone you know in the athletic dept. or are you getting this 3rd hand?

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTweeds

@Tweeds. We got the email from a reader (and prominent member of the Belvedere Fan Club).

I hope Wojo comes because he will convince the freshmen coming to Duke next year to follow him to UD. Why play in front of 9,000 fans when you can play in front of 13,000!

BOOM! UDPride'd your asses

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterDon Donoher

Tweeds: there's obviously some sarcasm attached to this post. That's all I'll say.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Blackburn

Donoher: well played

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMr. Blackburn

@blackburn: indeed.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterThe Situation

Yeah-got the sarcasm loud and clear. Do you think there is any validity to the rumor? I know John's freaking out now b/c he thinks Staten would bolt. The BR team is of the opinion that if BG is here a while from now thats a problem. Whether this rumor has any legs or not, I think it raises a couple bigger questions- do you guys want to see BG gone after this season? and if yes, who do you think should replace him?

02.25.2010 | Unregistered Commentertweeds

Well, whoever posted this on Pride succeeded in getting people up in arms for at least a short time. A+ for that, and you didn't even need pictures of monster cocks.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

The sweatervests will go nuts when Staten goes to DePaul. He will go from the basketball Mesiah to less then Trent Meachum instantly. UDPride would implode.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterMo

Thread already closed by Hitler

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDuke Coach

I mean Mussolini

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDuke Coach

@Tweeds. The person who emailed this to us also emailed us about the Stevie Thomas transfer (as stated above) so they are 1 for 1 in the breaking news category.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterDon Donoher

Dammit sorry. The UDPride Mods.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDuke Coach

Its cool Duke Coach. Just FYI, we've only banned one person on this site, and Jersey knows exactly what he did wrong....

By the way, I also heard a rumor that Phil Jackson longs for the midwest so he can teach kids and find his Chi....Blackburn any truth to the rumor Phil is going to leave Kobe at the alter and come coach at dayton? This rumor is coming from the same person who told me Norman Plummer got a DUI

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterJim O'Brien

@Donoher-There is so much sarcasm flying around this site, I wasn't sure if that was sarcasm as well. 1 for 1. Thats 100%. Not bad

If it is a Duke Coach, is it Collins, Wojo, or a former Duke assistant Tommy Amaker who is having a good year at Harvard? Interesting...

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTweeds

@Tweeds: people seem to think that there's no way Gregory would leave Dayton for DePaul, I'm not so sure. Relying on the fact that BG turned down the opportunity twice before doesn't do the situation justice. Things change, people change, opinions change. Maybe BG is ready for a new challenge, maybe he just wants to return to Chicago. These variables must be considered. It wouldn't shock me if he left.

You are getting to the real point of this post--what does this season, one that was filled with unprecedented promise, tell us about BG, this program, etc? Do expectations change because of this abortion of a season? I hope not, because although we all felt that the preseason expectations far outweighed this team's abillities, at the very least it set the bar. I'd hope that Gregory at least reboots his system a bit and focuses on maybe cutting the rotation down when the situation calls for it.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

Speaking of Norman Plummer...the guy HAD to be on his way to Taco Bell right?

Do black people eat at Taco Bell? That is not a racist question. I'm serious.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterDon Donoher

A Duke coach would be the kiss of death.

Check out Coach K's coaching tree: Mike Brey, Quinn Snyder, Tommy Amaker. Not exactly a successful group. Jury is still out on Johnny Dawkins.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

Well, the good news is Calipari will be out of a job again in a year when they find out all the terrible things John Wall has done. Maybe we can get him.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterJim O'Brien

@Blackburn - Good stuff.

"The system" is what BG is. Stick to it at all costs. But what happens when these seniors graduate and are replaced by (presumably) more talented youth? Next year's team will be considerably smaller, more finesse, and younger, especially if Wright bails. Essentially a blank canvas. Does the same system remain, or is BG planning some kind of overhaul that couldn't happen with the talent on the current team?

That's the thing I'm most interested in right now. The newcomers, and how BG builds the team around them, CJ, Benson, and Paul Willie. Maybe throw Fabrizius in there as well, because when healthy he was pretty good this year and should at least improve marginally.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Let me ask you guys...if we win the NIT...do we celebrate? How do I react? I haven't felt this awkward about a situation since I had to sit next to Blackburn for 5 hours.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterJim O'Brien

If we win the NIT Swampy will donate an "NIT National Champs" banner.

I'd probably say something like "Yep, that just happened." and move on. The NIT is more about building for next year, except the 'next year' guys for UD are still convincing sophomore girls that blowjobs don't violate their abstinence o-ring they got at bible camp. They could stop now Weldavenure style and it wouldn't mean dick for next year.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

I say he goes. He thought he could come to UD push around the A10 with all the Izzo rejects Swampy could recruit for him. Even though these guys crapped the bed on him, next year will not be as good as this. Too many new guys playing in a stupid system.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterVic Cassano

As a Chicagoan, the names most often thrown around for the DePaul job have been Craig Robinson and Chris Lowery (Southern Illinois). It's believed they're willing to throw a little more money around after the Wainwright failure, thus BG's renewed interest.

@Donoher: As someone who lived in the deepest part of the Darkside my junior year, I can assure you the fine dining at the Taco Bell on Brown and Wyoming knew no color boundaries. A veritable rainbow of trash could be found there round the clock.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterOliver

Will we get a coach that is a little taller next time?

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterSpike

I am down here in jacksonville and stay informed about the program. Change would be very harmful to the program at this time. we are so close to the promised land of making the NCAA. Have faith it will happen. These rumors are bogus

We are the pre-season pick to domenate this league, it ain't over yet fellas

Long live our tradition

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRudy's Bitch

Can we get the REAL TRUE STORY to comment on these rumors? I feel like he can be enlighten us all. Has his connection to the UD program been confirmed? Is it Tim Wabler?

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTweeds

@Spike: Maybe taller, but certainly not more handsome.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterJim O'Brien

I LOVE how Craig Robinson is considered a coach with promise. I can't wait to watch him crash and burn.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

Rudy's Bitch: you are down in Jacksonville?

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

@Mr. Blackburn: Like my presidency

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBarack Obama

@Blackburn-I've heard rumors on the L here in Chicago that Depaul is putting together a packaged deal, Robinson, BG, and the native son Barack Obama returning to Chicago as a DePaul assistant when his first/only term as President concludes.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterTweeds

UD pride is about to explode. just look at the posts. I can't wait for them to turn all paid and people leave in droves

@ Blackburn how many hits does this site get daily? I think we can get it above udpride. The insanity on that site, is overwhelming. although makes for good things to laugh at.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterDoug Hauschild

To Mr Blackburn: I live on Forsyth near the main street bridge area. great place, been here for about ten years

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterRudy's Bitch

@Doug Hauschild: we are currently averaging 13,490 hits a day

@Rudy's Bitch: I only ask because your IP comes back to Cincinnati. I've only been to Jax for a few UGA/FLA football weekends. Love the weather down there.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

@ Blackburn
13K per day...now I don't feel special...

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBRPride

@BRPride: everyone on here is a special snowflake. Most "visitors" are just passing through.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

@Rudy's Bitch. I love your enthusiasm. We need it with John out of commission for the week. Quick question, what exactly IS UD's tradition. And no, I am not ripping you. I really am curious. I've never thought of that.

And also, yes, Dayton was picked to "dominate" the league but your whole "have faith" comment confuses me. Are you saying Dayton still has a chance to dominate the league this year?

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterDon Donoher

Check out what the boys over at PBandBlanket have done to their "site":

What the fuck has the world come to?

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterBrownsFlyer

@Donny: I think he is saying not to close the door on this season yet, that we could still run the table in AC. Which is true. I mean it's factually accurate.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

I just went over to PB&B, fucking brilliant.

02.25.2010 | Registered CommenterTom Blackburn

I'll admit, I helped the women's team out at practice the past 2 seasons, if the male flyers could shoot half as well as the lady flyers could they'd be a top 20 team. Jabir is a great guy, happy he's doing well.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterJimmy Chitwood

@ Jimmy Chitwood-- I am pretty sure the guys would shoot better if they were to shoot at a hoop that was over twice the size of the ball. The ball girls use have a much better chance of going in.

I take it back, London/Kurt/Rob L/.... Would still have trouble.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterGhetto Shopper

Yah I understand that, just sayin our guys aren't even close...and layups. No excuse for those.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterJimmy Chitwood

Donoher ... Plummer crashed into the pole in front of my house at Alberta. I watched them handcuff him, arrest him and put him in the car all while I was drinking a beer on my porch at like 3 am.

Charles Little (passenger) just sat on the side walk holding two bags of Wendy's. By the time Plummer was in the car bag one was gone and he just started walking towards Gardens with bag two.

Hilarious, very funny night. Made great news for my radio show the following day.

02.25.2010 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

I was in the Providence Airport today, having a Sam at a bar until my flight took off and sports center comes on the tv.

To my shock and awe Dayton was on the big board as one of those "in or out" teams they like to do. I haven't seen any sports literally since Sunday night so when UD lost on Wednesday I just assumed it was all over.

Then I hear the commentators saying Dayton needs to win 2 of their final 3 to have a shot and if they win their remaining three they will feel pretty good about themselves on Selection Sunday.

Did I miss something? This shit cannot be happening ... did every fucking bubble team lose the past four days? Am I in a cloudy haze, high as fuck. It was my first beer so I know I wasn't drunk.

So, naturally I check out some websites to find that Dayton is somehow still in people's brackets ... I mean even I have tempered myself after getting frantic texts from Tweeds on how Dayton had 9 points with 2 min left in the first half.

Can it be? Dayton has another life?

As for the BG shit, smoke is being blown up your asses. I'll bet three figures on it if anyone wants in ...
