Same Old, Same Old

Caveat emptor, Mr. Wabler.Where to start with this game? Everything about this one was pretty predictable: Kevin Anderson got his (22 points, 4 assists, 3 rebounds), David Gonzalvez was clutch down the stretch, UD out rebounded a team (43-25) but turned the ball over too many times (20) to make it count. You cannot expect to win a tough road game when you shoot 34% from the field and turn the ball over 20 times, it is as simple as that. With that being said, I'm gonna go ahead and list out my observations from this game. I know that most of these are going to be very profound, original ideas to everyone, so here they are:
1.) Kevin Anderson is really fucking good at the game of basketball. If it weren't for a guy by the name of JC, Anderson would definitely be in the running for POY in the A-10. The guy is one of the purest shooters in the league and can beat the quickest of quick (London) off the dribble at will. The shots that this guy was creating, you cannot even get mad about. There is hope that between Parker and Staten we'll have a PG that is a legit scoring threat, isn't there?
2.) Screw the zone, teams should be putting full court pressure on the Flyers the entire game. This team is constantly trying to go 100 mph and as a result averages almost 15 turnovers a game. As we have seen with most games, the Flyer's backcourt does not take care of the rock and seems to panic when faced with a full court pressure scheme.
3.) Dan Geriot is eerily similar to the old, sweaty guy that tries far too hard during a pick up game at the local Y. I mean between the hiked up shorts, the baggy white undershirt, and being white, he has that role pegged to a T. It really is a shame that he blew out his ACL because that old man used to be able to play.
4.) Did Chris Wright miss the bus to Richmond? I'm not sure where he was for this game, because he for damn sure was not out on the court. For being the leader of this team, he needs to realize that his teammates are relying on him to take charge in a must win game on the road against a formidable opponent.
5.) The Big Dog is soon to be emaciated because no one will let him eat. I lost track after about 4 or 5, the amount of times that Big Dog was waving his hands in the air, as to say, "Hey guys, I'm wide fucking open, pass me the damn ball." This team must have a phobia of passing the ball in to the post, because it never happens. You cannot expect the perimeter to open up if you only swing the ball around the top. Dump the ball into the post every once in a blue moon and see what happens, I think you'll be happy with the result, BG.
6.) I've been weary about taking my shots at BG all season because I think no matter what, it is the players on the court that prosper or fail. There were two things that I didn't like from him this game. One being his inability to draw up successful sets coming out of a dead ball, and two being at the beginning of the last Flyer timeout, the camera zoomed in on the UD huddle and you could visibly see BG say, "Alright, who's in?" Less than a minute left, down three and you don't know who you have on the court? Remove your head from your rectum, Mr. Gregory.
Artist rendering of Geriot7.) I did not know that it was possible to have uglier cheerleaders than UD. I think Richmond might take the cake on this one. If I'm not mistaken, there was one, MAYBE two, respectable looking girls. Kudos to the perv camera man who did an up-skirt shot of THE attractive cheerleader.
8.) How long until it comes out that For-three-zius' knee injury is far worse than any of us thought and has to go under the knife? Once we are officially invited to the NIT or scrap him now? Clearly this is far worse than originally reported. With the Flyers seeing zones left and right, you would think that The Lukeness Monster would be out there for more than three minutes. Put the lack of defense and athleticism aside, the kid can flat out shoot and needs to be out there against these zones.
9.) The Flyers got JC'd against a team that does not start with X. Just as Crawford did to London Warren at the end of the game at the Cintas Center, there was nothing that MJ could do to stop David Gonzalvez as he hit fadeaways with a hand in his eye. Gonzalvez decided to find his jumper at halftime, and coupled with Anderson's stellar play, that was enough to spur the Spiders on to victory.
10.) 20 offensive rebounds is quite impressive. The announcers kept marveling at this statistic. The thing that they did not focus on was what caused these rebounds: missed shots. So yes, Kurt and CJ were crashing the offensive glass, but its pretty easy to snag 5 offensive boards when your team only shoots 34% from the field.
The sad part about this Flyer team is that when they showed the graphic of the A-10 tournament bracket, I could not even convince myself that they have a chance of snagging the A-10 auto bid. No matter where the Flyers end up in the bracket, I do not see them beating any of the top four teams in the second round. Sure they are capable of it, but with a team that is so wildly inconsistent it's hard to expect the right team to show up.
I can't wait for this team to blow SLU out to get their 20th win of the season so that BG can add another twenty-win season to his resume, and make the university and some fans alike think that BG is a great coach and the right coach for the future. If anyone is interested in the NIT pizza party, please send your information to Mr. Donoher as he will be organizing the event.
I'm not sure which is a bigger surprise to me, that the Flyers are likely not going to be in the NCAA tourney after returning 10 guys or that I was able to come up with 1,100 words after that painful loss. I guess its perfect timing for Spring Training to start...
Effective Field Goal Percentage (eFG%): adjusts for the fact that a 3-point field goal is worth one more point than a 2-point field goal.
Turnover Percentage (TO%): is an estimate of turnovers per 100 plays.
Offensive Rebouning Percentage (OR%): measures a team's ability to get offensive rebounds.
Free Throw Rate (FT Rate): is a measure of both how often a team gets to the line and how often they make them.

do NOT fall back on baseball. that's close to falling back on NASCAR. you will take this season like Johnny Weir takes his men. to the bitter end
besides, either you're a Reds fan, thus you have no good things to look forward to; or you're a Red Sox/Yankees/Cardinals/Cubs fan, thus a douchebag.
All I have to say is this.
Marcus Johnson has been the biggest disppointment I have ever seen as a senior ... I expected Lowery to regress after his injury, especially since he was hit or miss before it.
But Marcus is fucking awful. Marcus turns it over twice in the final 100 seconds. All those 1-4 point losses are wins if the Marcus of the first three years shows up this season.
It's sad to say and I never thought I would EVER say this ... but fuck you Marcus.
This season just affirms my love of the high school state tourney. It's just basketball, and I don't give two shits about the outcome. Not even for my alma mater. I'll probably get mocked because HS sports are pretty polarizing, but shit, it's much better than this fucking team. And to think, my buddy actually asked if I was buying tickets to the home A10 game. Ha.
Harry, not only does Geriot look like Captain Basketball (or name for THAT guy growing up), he also looks like the average slow pitch softball dude. It's scary how spot on the resemblance is, right to the cop haircut.
#5 really stuck out at me. i was watching the game w/ my pops and we kept saying, look at how deep kurt and devon are under the basket, dump it inside. so true, if you dont even throw it into the post once in a while, the perimeter will never open up. so glad that we should actually be a decent ball handling team next year w/o lowery and warren. i understand that ud has to play up tempo because every player (almost) is a freak athlete, but sometimes that just doesnt work. when that doesnt work, we have to rely on a halfcourt which bg is terrible at. it sucks that CW basically cannot create his own shot for himself. the offense needs to revolve around movement so that our best players (CW and CJ) can catch the ball while rolling and already have the momentum going towards the hoop. hopefully staten and parker can come in next year and do what kevin anderson did tonight (MID RANGE JUMPERS)
Excellent recap. Games like these are why I could never cover this team for a living.
I said this last year, but it's worth mentioning again. If you're Devin Searcy, how do you not transfer at the end of last season? You know Kurt's going to start every game and play more than you even though you passed him as a basketball player about half way through your sophomore year. I can't believe the kid stuck it out at UD. Anyone giving odds that BG gives him another big ol F U next season and starts Kavanaugh over him?
Do you think the same rehab center Tiger Woods went to will help me with my addiction to UD basketball. Seriously, I even resorted to listening to the Flyer Pep Band soundtrack and Sandstorm all while drinking a homemade Fieldhouse fishbowl. Why am I am loser and a sucker for believeing for a second that they would win a fucking road basketball game??
Basketball today is all about guard play, especially college basketball. The era of the big man is officially over. The Flyers just lack good guard play; without it, your team will collapse. I do not blame Chris Wright for how he has played this season. He is being asked to handle the ball, take perimeter jump shots, etc. He just does not have the skill set to do those things. He should be permanently planted on the baseline; cutting to the basket, posting-up defenders, grabbing offensive rebounds. If you do not have guards who can penetrate to the basket, hit open jump shots, and not turn the ball over, your offense will not be successful.
Look at the great teams around the country, better yet the A-10: Xavier (Halloway, Lyons, Crawford, Jackson), Temple (Brooks, Fernandez, Guzman), and Richmond (Anderson, Gonzalvez, Martel, Butler). All of these teams are guard oriented. They make the plays for their team; shooting, passing, handling the ball. Why are Demarcus Cousins' stats so good? Yeah, he is good, but Wall and Bledsoe demand so much attention from the opposing defenses, that his opportunities open up. Same reason why Lauderdale can get an occasional lob and Diebler and Buford get open jump shots for Ohio State. You can say this for all of the good teams around the country. Guard play is the most important aspect of basketball today.
It is very frustrating to watch this team because I watch the good teams of college basketball and think there is no comparison between Dayton and those good teams. There is no comparison. I have never seen a team so good at home and so bad on the road. And I will argue there is a discrepancy because of guard play. How can London Warren be in the program for four years and not develop? Harry, you sad most of the time, the players have to be able to play, but what is the offseason workouts for this team or the teaching lessons for this team? Are London and Rob not schooled on how to play properly? I don't know....it is evident to me why this team fails.
@Jeff-I agree with you that gaurd play is the key to success, especially in college, but when your subpar post players are pinning guys underneath the rim (as ours were last night)-You've got to at least throw the ball inside to keep the defense honest. Even if the shot isn't coming from the post it will hopefully open up a few more things on the perimeter. There is no where to go but up for our half court offense.
Also @Jeff, if you don't think London's developed in his four years-you're crazy. When he came in as a Freshmen, he was so out of control on both ends of the floor I didn't know if he was going to make it all four years. Sure, he still can't shoot and I'm looking forward to having a PG that can shoot, distribute, defend, and lead as much as you are, but London turned himself into a serviceable player. Its not typically pretty but I've enjoyed his tenacity and commitment to defense. He had a great game distributing against WVU last year. Still not sure why he fouled Anderson (an 82% FT shooter) 40 feet from the basket in a 1 point game with a 15 sec differential between shot/game clock, but I digress.
@Secaur-My buddies and I were laughing last night after the game that once Kurt leaves we are just going to have to start watching a "lesser Kurt"...welcome to the floor Matt Kavanaugh.
I'm just hoping we don't quit these couple weeks. As frustrating as this season has been, these Seniors did give UD our first NCAA tournament win since 1990 and gave us a lot of excitement last season. I hope they can somehow finish off strong.-My UDPride commentary for the day.
Agree Tweeds.
At least London and Kurt played like they wanted to win the entire season.
I cannot say the same for Lowery, Marcus and Mickey. I understand the shortcomings of both London and Kurt but I will miss the way they play the game and never give up. Obviously if I had a team I wouldn't want those guys starting, but I would want them on my roster they are quality guys and played their asses off.
Kurt really surprised me this season and I truly believe that if he actually touched the fucking ball he could have scored at least 7 points a game ... there were tons of games where he had his guy "pinned" under the cup. Last night was a joke, he was fucking DOMINATING without the ball down there. Shit at halftime he had 5 and 6 ... I thought to myself if Kurt ends up with 12 points we will win ... then they just abandoned his ass and started chucking three's when the game got tight.
I have no faith they will win more than a game in the A-10 tournament let alone Saturday's game ... but I will continue to watch because I am a fan ... I will just have lower blood pressure during the games because I won't be expecting much.
There will be 13000+ fans at senior night on Saturday and I, like most of them, will not be cheering for what these seniors have done...but for what they will do...fucking leave. At this point, this program lost more when Little left last year than they are going to lose when Kurt, Rob, London, Marcus and Mickey leave this year. Even if CW bolts, this team will still be better by subtraction next year.
@BRPride-I agree that this team and the fans need a fresh start. This season will definitely be one of UD's most disppointing seasons ever, especially with the expectations. However, you can't discount the success they had last season. As disappointing as this season has been, I'm choosing to remember the good times. Dan Fox should get to start on Saturday. He's earned it.
@Harry-One additional point you could have made is that I think we are all still waiting for one of our wings/bigs to overplay/hedge the dribble handoff screen and make Harper put the ball on the floor. Our wings/bigs kept going behind the dribble handoff screen and Harper nailed 3 huge 2nd half 3s.
If Staten dribbles in between his legs on a trap I'll fucking kill someone.
tweeds please take a look at London's stat lines over the years, he is the same player as he was when he came in if adjusted for minutes played.
http://espn.go.com/ncb/player/profile?playerId=31534
The numbers exclude any type of subjectivity so no, Jeff is not crazy
Yeah, I do agree Kurt had his man pinned under the basket, but he wasnt't given the basketball. If he was so pinned, why didn't anybody get him the ball? The answer is because Dayton's guards do not know how. They do not know how to pass to the post. The post players can be open all they want, but they aren't going to get it unless someone can get it to them. And you know what? Kurt has been at Dayton four years as well, and he struggles making layups. He missed two in one possession last night under 5 minutes. He missed a right handed one from the left side against Temple.
I guess my biggest grief with this team is the development of talent. I mean, CJ's shooting has improved, but does the guy know how to dribble right handed? Has anyone seen him try to dribble with his right hand? Can Paul Williams do anything else besides shoot spot up three's from the corner? Can Fabrizius only shoot three's? And you know about what I think of London and Rob. It is just so frustrating watching this team play. I love the university, the fan base, the tradition. I just do not see why this team can't be better. I just don't see it.
By the way, Chris R at UD pride just wrote a column that basically summed up everything you guys have been saying over the past few months. I was like, where have I heard all of this before? Oh thats right, at Blackburn.
@Harry-I'm not a huge numbers guy, b/c while you can't argue with them, I don't beleive they always tell the while story. My opinion on London was completely subjective and I'm going off this "eye test" I keep hearing about come selection time. As far as running the team/distributing the ball, London is light years ahead of where he was his freshmen/sophomore year. Its not always pretty, but I don't think anyone would have been saying this his freshmen year "we need London in the game to calm everyone down and get them organized" as ppl have been saying this year. Now I know Rob's play has a lot to do with it, but thats not the only reason. There is no way you can't say this guy hasn't improved somewhat.
Totally agree.
London could barely dribble and run at the same time his freshman year.
He is 10 times better and I feel more comfortable with the ball in his hands now than I did then.
If all that matters is winning in the NCAA Tournament ... then London Warren basically single handily helped to get that win.
@Tweeds yes he has improved "somewhat" but to try to think that it was a drastic improvement is silly. "In terms of running the team and distributing the ball"? This team is poorly run and distribution is a huge problem for them. So if you're looking for moral victories, then sure, take this one. Also, when was the last time someone said that London needs to be in the game to "calm everyone down"? I'm pretty sure everyone has had the opposite viewpoint.
@John, really? are you that blind to see that Chris Wright played arguably the best game of his collegiate career that day and put up 27 points and 10 boards? If anyone "basically single handily helped to get that win" it is clearly CW.
I think the truth lies somewhere in the middle. Has London shown marked improvement over his 4 year career? I definitely think so. His defense and decision making have improved a lot, and that's something you can't always see from a box score. Plus, he could have (possibly) been even better if he were playing 28 mpg to Rob Lowery's 12 instead of splitting time 50/50 this season.
HOWEVER, to have a senior PG who not only cannot but downright refuses to shoot a wide open jump shot is embarrassing. I'm not even talking about 3's; the fact that there's no one in the entire city of Dayton who can teach this kid to shoot a 10-12 foot pull up jumper with any level of consistency is a joke. I can't wait to hear what the BG apologists will come up with if/when he doesn't win with Staten and Parker.
@Harry-I will take this moral victory. Thanks for extending the offer. I'm not saying London should win the Cousy award or even be nominated (as he was with about 100 other PGs-think I saw John on the list as well), but he is a lot better running the team/distributing now then he was his freshmen/sophomore year. Therefore, he improved. Thats all I was saying. Actually a lot of people have said that we need to get London in the game to run the team/calm people down even here in the comments section on the very blog contribute too.
That is why I through basically into that sentence.
London probably dished off five to Wright ... London and Wright played the best games ever that day.
@Secaur ... I agree, but that is not the point. BG never recruited him to be a shooter and knew coming in he couldn't do it. London therefore worked on all other aspects of his game and has really become a pretty good little player for UD. Trust me, I want a PG who can play 30 min a game and can shoot ... that is what Meachum could do and what Staten will do. London was recruited to be Meachum's backup, bring energy and fire off the bench and play defense. When Meachum shoved his dick up BG's ass he was left with London Warren and two Juco's (Sandoval and Lowery) until he could corral another all around guard (Staten). Given the fact London has become an above average distributor and can get to the rim and score along with his D, I am shocked anyone can say he has not grown since freshman year.
@Secaur- I too, look forward to the days where we have a Point Gaurd that can shoot.
london was supposed to be our backup point guard. jacob pullen from kansas state decommited very late and left us hanging w/ london as the starter. pullen is a great shooter, we would be so much better if he came here.
Shithouse comment anyone?
"... then London Warren basically single handily helped to get that win." -John
haha sorry, had to.
Kurt's "GOAT" dunk was on College Gameday today during the throw to commercial for teams "On the bad side of the bubble"...
Hubert, Bob Knight, and Jay all take Dayton if it were between Dayton and Virginia Tech for the last team in. So.....THIS GAME IS A MUST WIN!!!!!!111!11!!!!!!
/UD Pride'd
WE ARE NOT LOSING AGAIN! Tonight starts the run, 5 straight wins. Book it.
Or, you know, two straight wins followed by an implosion in AC. Either way.
Its so gay that anyone is talking about us nationally.
UD has no chance unless they win today and win the first two games of the A-10 tourny. If they do that they will at least be in the discussion next Sunday ... the only way they feel safe is if they win three and get to the A-10 Finals.
Folks, that shit ain't happening. If it does, I will consider daily blackouts till gametime the following Thursday.
@rose: For someone to decommit, doesn't he first have to COMMIT?
@anyone: Is there any scenario where UD would win tonight and get the #7 seed in the A10 tourney? I think this would actually be a best case scenario for the Flyers. If I understand correctly, UD would then host the #10 team in the league and then face the #2 seed in its first game in AC. That would (I'm assuming) be Xavier. I think this is UD's most likely track to the A10 semifinals.
And, to paraphrase, Mr B: I don't wanna live in a world where a team that goes 9-7 in the Atlantic 10 can get an at large bid .... unless that team is the Flyers.
I don't think it matters who Dayton plays in the A10 tourney. The Flyers match up well with each of the top 3, it's just a matter of making the plays necessary to win, something they don't do away from home against A10 teams. Only Rhode Island is an iffy matchup for UD, and it's not like UD isn't capable of beating them.
i honestly cant believe that i still check the bubble watch... I also can't believe that we are still one of the 'last four out'.... goddamnit if they could have stepped up like once in the last 3 weeks......
The Flyers match up well with Richmond and Temple? Could have fooled me. I guess maybe Richmond because the Spiders are small? I'd say UD matches up about 20 times better w/ X than with the other 2.
Just got done reading some Pride and it made me throw up in my mouth. A few of the power brokers over there Chef, Levelbest, etc don't see anything wrong with this program. They see no need to improve, that the status quo is acceptable.
The Resolution is calling Pride Buster to drop some senior porn for Senior Day on them....
UConn is now out.
Cincy is now out.
Tulsa is now out.
All had bad weeks.
Haha, this is so stupid.
If Rhode Island beats UMass and the Flyers beat SLU, they will be the #6 seed I believe. We've got the tiebreaker against Charlotte, so we'd be on track to play Richmond in AC. I'd still much rather play X.
@Secaur - Dayton at their best is better than every other team in the league. It's not a matter of matchups with UD, it's a matter of actually stepping up and playing the way they are capable of playing. They won't do it on the road, so it's really moot, but I don't think matchups really matter one bit. The only bad matchup for UD is any arena but their own.
Rhody lost. What's the mean for our A-10 seed? Anything?
the rhodies lost at umass (they might be a more frustrating program than the flyers), uconn lost earlier. If san diego st gets upset by Air Force tonight UD might still have a glimmer of hope.... which just sounds absolutely ridiculous
i think its about time georgia tech goes on the bubble as well
@Adam: Do you mean Dayton at its best in UD Arena? Otherwise, there's no basis for your claim. If Temple and Dayton both play their best game on a neutral floor, I don't see UD winning.
In my opinion, saying it's not a matter of match-ups is just plain silly. What does Dayton struggle with? Teams with two (or more) really good guards i.e. K State, Nova, Temple, Richmond. Halloway is a nice player, but I wouldn't say XU has two really good guards. Plus they struggle with UD's athleticism and can't keep us off the glass (nor can Richie obviously, which is why they are a better match-up than TU).
P.S. - I think BG just needs a few more seasons to come into his own. He's a young coach on the rise, I swear.
Brian Gregory blows goat dick.
@Secaur - I have a response, but fuck it. Can't say anything after tonight's thrilling performance. I'm done caring about this season. Joey Votto will save my soul.
FUCK ... THIS ... FUCK ... MJ ... FUCK ... LOWERY ... FUCK ... PERRY ... FUCK ... BG ... FUCK ... DONOHER
We should put BG and Jim Baron in a suck off. First one to make the goat cum wins.
please get bg out of there. you need more than athletes to win games. i dunno how many times i saw players biting on dribble penetration to leave their man for an open 3. you need to play SMART BASKETBALL.
I almost left at half.
Dayton proved that it is an average team in an above average conference. Can't say that any of the departing seniors will be missed in light of their performance on the floor. The effort, for the most part, is there but the talent is not.
The personnel changes are maddening; Benson and Searcy both show some skills underneath on the offensive end, and yet their minutes are limited--Searcy gets 6, and Benson gets 8. Mid-second half, Dayton makes a run at SLU with Benson and Searcy on the floor. The team has gained momentum. A timeout is called (I believe by SLU), and Searcy and Benson are pulled. Why?!?! Searcy never got back in the game. I think Benson played 1 add'l minute.
Why, oh why, is Fabrizius in the game at all? Are his minutes mandated by the EEOC? He has limited mobility so he offers nothing on defense, and he can't get open for a three.
Huelsman's totals look nice until you see the 7 missed FTs and the 5 TOs. Two of his buckets came when an out-of-control Lowery tried to penetrate past three players, realized he had no chance in hell to score, and fumbled the ball to KH who, surprise, surpise, surprise, put it in the hole.
CW--he can't hit the outside jumper and teams are, for the most part, doubling down on him when he goes inside. In the last half of the conference play, it seems that as many shots are blocked as make it to the rim.
CJ looked lost tonight, with long stretches in a sitting position. MJ is done. No need to mention MP and PW (oops, I did).
This team has never recovered from the loss at SLU. I predict a victory against GW and a loss to X. Likely host 1-2 NIT games, with large sections of the Arena sitting empty.
SLU, on the other hand, will likely surprise some teams in the conference tourney, and they looked stocked for the future.
@ rich - exactly, gregory is so concerned about depth he has no clue about what is working on the floor with the players. he never abandons the "system"
I'm not an expert by any means, but it seems like the best guys should be in at all times unless...
a) said player(s) is/are winded.
b) said player(s) is/are in foul trouble.
c) Your name is Brian Gregory.
