Recon: Taking a Swing at a Fallen King

So here we are, huh? I didn't see this coming. If you had asked me what I'd do to ensure Dayton played UNC in a championship game at the start of the season, I'd would have said that I'd have given mouth to mouth to Donoher's blogging career and given up drinking for the entire season. My last chance to post a picture of my girl Amanda.Fuck it, I'm all in. LETS GO GET AN NIT CHAMPIONSHIP! Come on fellas. One last reason to drink to Kurt Huelsman's honor. One last chance to see London go from one end of the court to the other before I can chug a beer. One last time to see Marcus Johnson look lost on offense. Say formal goodbyes to whatever contributions Mikey Perry and Big Shot Rob Lowery brought to our teams (28% from three?). One last chance to see Brian Gregory roam the sidelines completely embarrassed by his own coaching ability. If our anonymous emailer is right and he's gone after this season, that's alright with me, because we reached his ceiling coaching wise.

BG is 29-5 against out of conference opponents in the past two seasons. Regardless of some of cup cake scheduling, that's a pretty impressive number, until its compared to another. In the past two seasons we've whipped up a 21-15 record against in conference opponents. Throw away the wins against the hapless Fordham Rams, George Washington Rich People, and St. Bonnies, and you have a losing record against the Atlantic Ten. For a team with this much talent, completely recruited by BG, and with his system burned into their psyche, it is unacceptable to have a losing in conference record. If we hate Luke for being a one trick pony, then maybe we should call BG the same thing. The man can coach defense, but that's it. With BG on his way to DePaul, and assuming we keep at least 3 of our incoming recruits (Staten will probably stay) this might be the perfect time for a young, aggressive coach to come take over. BG is stubborn and smart coaches can take advantage of the fact that we will never surprise them. Maybe a new coach is less set in his ways and more apt to create a system that matches the personnel as oppose to the other way around. Ok enough. Sorry, on to the game.

This ain't your daddy's Tar Heels. While it was clear that the Tar Heels would not be returning with the same talent from a National Championship season of a year ago, their struggles during this disappointing season makes our letdown look petty. Other than the smug prick who coaches them, North Carolina is lead by seniors Deon Thompson (13 ppg, 6 rpg) and Marcus Ginyard (8 ppg, 5 rpb, 2 apg) who aren't the most dominating players in the ACC, but needless to say they would have had might better careers playing at VCU or Xavier. Ed Davis (12, 9) is the most talented Tar Heel, but was limited by injuries this season which stunted his growth and the rest of the team struggled to score without him. He hasn't played a game since February 20th, and knowing our luck, he'll be back just in time to put 25 on us tonight. Deon Thompson missed this shot. Tyler Zeller (9, 5) is a 7 footer who is going to give Kurt fits on the post, though it should be noted that only once this entire season has he eclipsed 10 rebounds. How hard can it be for a guy who is seven feet tall to grab more than ten rebounds every once and a while.  This guy is a white guy, right? He's gotta be with that name. Did I mention I haven't seen UNC play for a single second all year? I probably should have mentioned that earlier.  Why am I even trying to give you a preview of them.

I won't be watching the game live tonight. I went to the game on Tuesday and skipped practice for it, and I can't miss practice again so I'll be watching it on TiVo after practice. If you have my cell number don't text me what happens. I've upgraded from Gin and Tonics to straight Gin Martinis so I'm looking forward to a couple while the Dayton All-Blacks take on the Tar Heels. A few things I'll be looking for...

  • I know John called for Kurt to get a double double tonight, but if he does we owe John beers. If he doesn't, John's getting blocked.
  • UNC supposedly has been having trouble handling the ball this season, but Dayton doesn't really force a lot of turnovers. If we can a few early and build some momentum, I don't know if UNC has the shooting ability to come from behind.
  • Winning the battle on the boards is the single most critical issue in the game tonight. Giving UNC second chances will be our downfall.
  • I hope Lowery gets benched.
  • Think we have a shot in hell that Kurt doesn't start?
  • We're two point favorites...who's got the brass balls to put money on THAT?
  • This is Marcus' last shot at a contract in the Euro Leagues...let's see if he steps up.
  • How many martinis can I have and still make it to work? 4?
  • Seriously guys, I know Secaur is all pissed that people care about the NIT, but just have fun tonight. Win or lose we get to watch our team one last time and I get to drink without my girlfriend giving me shit. ITS OK HONEY, IT'S FOR THE BLOG!!!
  • Coming tomorrow: Donoher's last post.
