Road Trippin’ With the Dayton Flyers: Moraga

Hey, Gang!  The 2017-2018 is in full-swing, and while we are all familiar with the raucous confines of The Sweater Centre; many Flyer Fanatics will cheer on UD on the road.  Whether you plan on checking out the mid-major action in Charleston, Pittsburgh or St. Louis, we’ve got you covered!  The 2017-18 Blackburn Review Travel Companion is your guide to the best and worst destinations for this year’s road slate.

Moraga, CA

December 19th

I can only assume that no one outside of the most masochistic Dayton fans are traveling around to watch them at this point.  UD Santa can affix clothespins to his balls and stream the games — in all their 64-bit glory — on A10 network from the discomfort of his home instead of subjecting himself to the anguish of watching Them Flyers in person.  But I digress, as we’re going (going) back (back) to Cali (Cali).

Yes, our mid-major darlings are flying commercial out to the Bay Area to play the return game in their home-home series with St. Mary’s, or St. Mary’s College of California if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.  Located in beautiful Moraga, California, St. Mary’s might as well be located in the Tuscan Hills.  Just look at that campus!  Unfortunately, there isn’t much in the way of tourist attractions in Moraga proper, but as any Californian will tell you: “Get outdoors, man.  The reason our state isn’t filled with fat and lazy people like Ohio is because we enjoy hiking and mountain biking year round and shredding the gnar in the winter.  Pack some GMO-free granola, your vape pen and take to the hills, man!”

There is a plethora of ethnic cuisine located near campus and one would have to assume a thriving Antifa community if you are into that sort of thing (I’m looking at you Beret Man).

Obviously NorCal has a lot to offer, so this is probably the one trip that is truly worthwhile from the perspective of finding shit to do.  UD winos can tour Napa Valley and sample the finest Cabs, our opiate addicts can likely score some smack in Oakland and due to California’s liberal leanings, you can easily find clean needles with which to shoot up.  Our fans are known for being very friendly, but head to San Francisco and bully some tech nerds.  Find what was formerly a dive bar (“Oh, I love dive bars!”), before the dorks became kings, and just start being an asshole.  These geeks need to be taken down a peg.

Another fun activity is to participate in a Bay Area Scavenger Hunt.  You can make your own tack list, but here are some fun examples.

  • Anti-Trump bumper sticker or protest (1 point)
  • Spot someone shitting in public in San Francisco (5 points)
  • Join a drum circle (7 points)
  • Head to Berkeley & find 5 white kids on campus (10 points or 2 points per kid if you can’t find 5)

McKeon Pavilion Facts:

  • Capacity: 3,500
  • Home of the St. Mary’s College of California Gaels
  • Student Section is nicknamed Gaelforce, not The Gaelforce, just Gaelforce.
  • Largest enclosed arena in Contra Costa County!
  • Interestingly enough, photos of the exterior of McKeon Pavilion don’t seem to exist.  It must be a beautiful building.
