An Unholy Occurrence

Another heart-breaker against the Rams puts UD on thin ice for Brooklyn. From Rhode Island blog, Rhody Rampage:

The Rhode Island Rams did it again. Another last-second shot by Rhody sank the Dayton Flyers for the third year in a row (if you can believe it), and the Rams came away with a dramatic 75-72 victory at the Ryan Center. Marquis Jones, who wore number 5 for URI, beat Dayton in 2011 with a circus layup at the buzzer, then beat them again with a three pointer in the final seconds last season. This season number 5 did it again, except this year it’s Xavier Munford who dons that jersey for the Rams. Similar to last year, X buried a three in the final seconds for the Rhody win, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. The win moves URI to 2-8 in the Atlantic 10 and 7-16 overall.

Three years in a row, uncanny. Kevin Dillard’s lone three of the night with just eight seconds left tied it up at 72 before Xavier Munford conjured up some patented Rhody magic and nailed a buzzer-beater to send Dayton on its way. Another gut-puncher in a season full of them, the Flyers are 2-6 in games decided by five points or less.

Dayton actually shot the ball well, got to the line more than the Rams and even out-rebounded URI by 8. However, as usual, UD’s defense belied its offensive effort. Rhody came into tonight’s game as one of the league’s worst offensive units, averaging around 66 points per contest, yet managed to hit 50% of their field goal attempts — including 46% from behind the arc.

Dyshawn Pierre’s play continues to improve, as the Canadian freshman poured in 15 points to go along with his 10 boards. Devin Oliver had a decent game as well, putting up a 12/6 effort — including hitting two threes out of three attempts on the night.

Josh Benson fouled out in just sixteen minutes of play, it’s clear he is simply trolling us at this point.

Brian Vonderhaar put up the most-deserved three trillion in the history of the game. I feel sorry that he has to travel and watch these games at such a close vantage point. Matt Derenbecker was a play or two away from putting up an impressive 18 trillion.

UD has yet to win a conference game on the road, dropping to 0-5 with trips to UMass, Charlotte and George Washington remaining on the schedule. Xavier comes into the Arena on Saturday, likely the last time many Flyer fans will pay attention to this team until October.
