The Matt Derenbecker experiment has come to an unsatisfying conclusion:

The University of Dayton has announced that sophomore forward Matt Derenbecker has decided to leave UD and will enroll at a school closer to home.

“I greatly appreciated my time in Dayton with coach Miller and the basketball staff,” Derenbecker said.  “They are genuinely interested in what is best for each player in their program.”

“I respect Matt’s decision, and wish him the best of luck in the future,” Flyer head coach Archie Miller said.  “We will continue to support Matt and help him with his transfer.”

Derenbecker, a native of Metairie, La., played one year for the Flyers after transferring from LSU.  He played in 30 games in 2012-13 averaging 4.5 points and 1.1 rebounds, and shooting .425 (37-87) from three-point range.

With the emergence of Dyshawn Pierre and the addition of Jordan Siebert, it’s clear Derenbecker’s minutes would have been limited during the upcoming season. On paper it makes perfect sense. The timing? Well…that’s a head-scratcher.

Matty Xbox, Louisiana Lightning, the Bayou Bomber, we wish you well.
