Cal Poly (-4) vs. Texas Southern
Crazy Mike Davis is coaching even crazier Aaric Murray. After stops at La Salle and West Virginia, Murray has finally finished a year in good standing and put together a solid season as well (21.2 ppg/7.7 rpg/2.6 bpg). Cal Poly, the only team in the field with a losing record, had an inspired run through the Big West tournament and captured the league’s automatic bid. Texas Southern is a member of the SWAC and their star player has a “No Worries” tattoo in the middle of his neck. That worries me, the California kids cover.
Iowa vs. Tennessee (+2.5)
There are times you have to consider variables beyond the court, and this is one of those instances. Fran McCaffery’s son is undergoing surgery on a thyroid tumor and will not join the team in Dayton until Wednesday afternoon at the earliest. Have to think this affects their preparation in some way.
The two teams are moving in opposite directions — Iowa lost six of their last seven, barely making the field and Tennessee won five of their last six, playing their way into the tournament. The Vols have been fantastic on defense and on the glass. Iowa lost to Northwestern in the Big Ten tournament. In short, UT is peaking and the Hawkeyes are leaking. I’d expect Tennessee to win this one outright, give me the points.
