Yes, UD shook off a sluggish start to earn their 18th win on the year. And sure, the Flyers got an important conference win on the road. But, we all know what this game was really about — the Arch Baron Cup. Seriously, just look at that thing. It screams legitimacy. A bunch of sixteen year old kids holding up a trophy that probably couldn’t hold Kyle Davis’ nutsack after he came out of an ice bath.
We don’t give out game balls, we were unfortunately never sanctioned by the proper governing bodies, but if we did, it would go to DURRELL Davis. The freshman hit four vital threes, three during key phases of the second half. Every time the Billikens regained the lead it seemed like Double D (I don’t like it either, I promise you’ll never see it again) was there to take it right back for the Flyers with a bomb from long range.
UD couldn’t get much of anything going offensively, shooting just 33% from the field, 27% from three and 63% from the charity stripe. There is no way you should be able to beat a D1 school on the road with those numbers. I think it is safe to say that this contest said a lot more about Saint Louis than it did about UD.
The game was an absolute slugfest, devoid of anything even resembling pace or decency. But, in the end YOUR Flyers came away with an important win, 51-44. The victory breaks UD’s three game road losing streak and keeps Dayton alive in the A10 hunt.
The Flyers, now 18-5 on the season, 8-3 in league play, try to restart their engines after pulling out a hard-fought victory against their long-standing rivals. Before the season we were completely focused, some thought obsessively, on winning the Arch Baron Cup. There were poetry slam competitions, three-legged races and general bad blood between the two schools all offseason.
Now we can all proudly sport our Arch Baron Cup Champion t-shirts and take full advantage of the bragging rights we surely earned tonight. As BR scribe Adam pointed out shortly after the game, Dayton now holds the Blackburn/McCafferty trophy, the Arch Baron Cup and the 2014 State Title. UD’s trophy case is stocked with goods aplenty.
Lastly, Mrs. Archie went BALLZDEEP on some dude from St. Louis.
