At the beginning of the conference season, I asked a bunch of you dummies what the A10 would look like after 18 games, and this is what you came up, vs what actually happened. Good news dipshits! We weren’t actually all that far off! Your half-assed knowledge of the A10 conference is well respected as far as I’m concerned.
When you look at how the season was supposed to play out, versus how it actually did, this is surprisingly a very fair comparison. We have three outliers, which I think everyone can agree with: UMass, Richmond and Davidson. I did not keep track of who exactly voted for what, but special shout out to the one person in our poll who correctly picked UMass to finish 12th. No one had Richmond higher than 6, nobody had Davidson lower than 7. We can all agree that most people were wrong about the outlooks of these respective seasons.
To my untrained eyes, the surprise of the season is obviously Richmond, and because of that I think TJ Cline locks up the POY award on Tuesday (3/7). I think it has been down to him and Jay Adams for the better part of 6 weeks now, and the over-achieving Spiders should be enough to give the nod to Cline.
I know everyone likes takes, so as a person who has followed the conference fairly closely all year, here’s my first team:
Jay Adams, G, St. Bonaventure
Marquise Moore, G, George Mason
Jack Gibbs, G, Davidson
Peyton Aldridge, F, Davidson
TJ Cline, F, Richmond
I know this is probably going to come as an unpopular opinion to a lot of Flyers, but I just don’t see how you can leave Gibbs and Aldridge off this list. In most cases you could say Davidson being 9th is enough to push them off the first-team, but these guys quite actually did everything for the Cats, every single night. Gibbs and Aldridge were 1st and 3rd in scoring in the A10, and Aldridge is fourth in rebounds behind two of the other guys on that list (Cline and Moore). Is there some lackluster defense in there? Sure. But I don’t think their defense is poor enough to bump them from the top 5 just out of spite. I think UD will bring a couple guys each to the 2nd and 3rd teams, but in the end, the balanced attack of the Flyers is what will again keep a few boys from the first team. Can’t really be mad about that. Again, just one man’s opinion, I’ve seen many first team lists thrown out there, feel free to post yours in the comments.
On the flip side, there is one Coach of the Year this season, and his name is Archie Miller. Dave Paulsen? Great season compared to the expectations going in, hats off. Will Wade? Great job, fine year for VCU that will see them in the tournament. Chris Mooney? Overachieved with a team picked 9/10 in the conference, props. All of these guys did fine jobs this year, but none like Archie. If Archie Miller doesn’t pick up his first COY, I smell bagmen around the A10 dinner table. He ran away with it, he deserves, give the man his award. If you have a rational objection to why Archie SHOULDN’T get Coach of the Year…comments section is right down there for ya.
OK, I wanted to make this one short and sweet because we put out a podcast today and there’s more stuff coming at you before Friday’s tilt in Pittsburgh. The whole BBR crew (even Donny) will give their predictions for the tournament, and I have a special edition preview for you Traveling Flyers, so you may be well informed and enjoy the great fruits that my hometown of Pittsburgh has to offer.
