The final score of 81-69 is a little deceiving. Dayton sprinted out to a huge lead and at the half lead 45-17 and took their foot clean off of the gas pedal. Presbyterian made a point to go out in the 2nd half and absolutely CHUCK from deep. Chuck they did as they finished the 2nd half shooting 10-25 from 3 to the tune of 40%. The finished 14-41 from deep and really, was the only reason the game was as respectable as it was. But this isn’t a Presbyterian Blue Hose blog, this is a Dayton Flyers blog so let’s get into how the home team performed today.
In a couple of words, pretty good! Especially in the first half. The players were already thinking about Christmas when they came out of the halftime locker room. Jalen Crutcher continues his stellar play. He finished with 19 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assist, 2 steals and only 1 turnover on 8-12 shooting (3-5 from 3) including a dazzling dribble move and no look pass to a cutting Ryan Mikesell for a dunk. Jalen continues to prove “Tom from Dayton” incorrect in his “Crutcher can’t be an A-10 PG” take. He was your WHIO Player of the game.
Jordan Davis had his best game of the season finishing with 18 points on 7-12 shooting. He still has his struggles from the 3 point line but he did a good job of getting to the basket off of the drive and getting some easy ones to go in. He needs to continue to show opposing teams that he is capable of getting to the hoop and finishing. If he can do that I think he might be able to open himself up for some easier 3 point attempts but it was good to see JD play well and hopefully that can continue.
Josh Cunningham took the day off essentially, He only played 17 minutes and finished with 5 points, 2-2 from the field. Obi and Mikesell accounted for the majority of the front court minutes yesterday with 24 and 31 minutes respectively. Obi and Mikesell each chipped in 8 points along with Cohill who is beginning to look more and more comfortable on the floor with each passing game.
Trey Landers brought his lunch pail and hard hat yesterday. He finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds and had his typical Trey Landers kinda game that we have come to expect from him. The one player I haven’t touched on yet is Frankie Pollicelli. The reason I haven’t touched on him is because he didn’t touch the floor in this game.
Now I don’t know what went down at practice or anything like that but Frankie not getting ANY burn in this game is head scratching. Grant said post game that it was “Just the way the game went” Whatever the hell that means. You can play Frankie in a crucial stretch of a game against Tulsa but you can’t find him minutes in a blowout vs Presbyterian? I don’t know that just doesn’t make any sense to me.
Okay that is all for this recap, I am keeping it short because well, I’ve said all that needs to be said about this one. Dayton returns to action on Saturday Dec. 29 against Georgia Southern. Blackburn will have the recon for you folks later in the week. I hope you the loyal reader enjoy your holidays and for everyone here at BR, let us be the first to wish you a Merry LOWD Christmas.
