Hello Friends! I’m the new Ombudsman here at the Blackburn Review.
I know what you’re thinking, “does a mid-major basketball blog that doesn’t take itself too seriously really need an Ombudsman?” Well, the answer is yes. The know nothings well-meaning lads that write for this site try their best, but one time they were wrong about the exact amount of time certain defenses were played during a 3 minute stretch of a game. I don’t know about you guys, but I can’t live with that. It’s an insult to people who play, coach and watch basketball. So here I am to keep their work in check.
Before I dive into the latest recap, here’s a little backstory on me: I went to UD and loved every second of it. So much so that I’ll challenge anyone who says anything bad about UD online to a fight. Do you have that kind of dedication to all things Flyers? Didn’t think so. Anyway, I’ve watched a lot of basketball in my 30 some odd years and am ready to assume anyone who disagrees with me hasn’t and doesn’t know what they’re talking about. I’ve been known to get equally upset about Ohio State QB takes as well as Bengals talk. But this is a Flyers blog, so I’ll stick to what I do best: being a know-it-all about Dayton Flyers Basketball. In my world, it’s God, UD, Anthony Grant and (if there’s time left) Family.
Onto doing my thing with the recap of our win over St. Bonaventure in Olean this weekend…
Title: A Game That Refused To End
Author: Tom Blackburn
Well, this one started off a little iffy when Blackburn mocked Saint Anthony Grant’s sartorial sense in the opening paragraph. I’m surprised he didn’t call for his firing like everyone has been doing for 2 years as well. I’m not sure Blackburn would critique a white man’s clothes like that, but that’s something I’ll have to ask former players about on Twitter and get back you on.
The second paragraph didn’t get much better, as Blackburn said the first 5 minutes were unwatchable. I went back and watched the tape. It was actually 4 minutes and 38 seconds. FAKE NEWS!!! Don’t worry guys, I’ll address it with him.
I guess the 3rd paragraph was fine. It was made better by including Steven Wright’s tweet about the EXACT time Dayton switched to zone. If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a thousand times…if you don’t have the exact minutes and seconds correct for when the Flyers are playing zone or man defense, you don’t know anything about basketball. Trust me, I’ve watched a LOT of basketball.
The 4th paragraph and accompanying tweet thread are when the wheels started to fall off for this recap. First Blackburn insinuated that underwhelming road play is symptomatic of Anthony Grant coached teams. Wrong! Then the tweet thread criticized his use of timeouts. Do you really think Archie was calling better timeouts at this point in his second season? I can assure you he wasn’t!
The next couple of paragraphs were fine, save the couple of tweets he included in between. One was from a BBR “contributor” who’s the leader of the UD Mob Horde and loudest voice among the “Fire Anthony Grant!” crew. The other is from a guy who doesn’t know ANYTHING about Dayton basketball, or the Bengals. Terrible people to use in a recap. But I digress…
I’ll be honest with you, folks, I almost had a heart attack reading the next paragraph. Coastal Elite Blackburn found it in his heart to give Anthony Grant some credit. Trust me when I say that physical pained him to do so.
I almost had a second grabber when Blackburn gave Coach some well deserved credit two paragraphs later for his timeout in the second OT. Of course he had to throw some shade and say there may not have been a play called (THERE WAS!) but I’ll take what I can get. It goes without saying that Coach deserves better.
Overall, not Blackburn’s best work but certainly not his worst. It’s definitely better than any of the young guys could have done, since they don’t know anything about basketball because they haven’t played, coached or watched enough of it. I do hope for better content from these guys the rest of the season, but I’m a realist and am not adjusting my expectations. Look for me on twitter (@BBROmbudsman) where I’ll be defending the Flyers and Coach Grant’s honor 24/7.
