I am starting this recap with 3:14 to go in the game. Dayton is currently losing by 15 points and it has been that way pretty much the entire game save for one Dayton 13-0 run at the end of the first half and into the early portion of the second. I’ve discussed lack of toughness and lack of effort before on the site, tonight was more of the same. Dayton got absolutely mauled on the glass. 19 offensive rebounds for the St. Louis Billikens was one of the many differences in this basketball game. Dayton got flat out embarrassed on Tuesday, in almost every facet. Hell, St. Louis who is one of the worst shooting teams in the country shot better from 3 then we did. This recap isn’t going to be a fun read. It sure as hell isn’t going to be fun to write. We have reached the dog days of February and Dayton has a defining stretch of their season coming up. Tonight didn’t inspire a lot of confidence going forward against the schedule we will be playing. Let’s get this stupid thing over with.
The game has officially gone final. 73-60. Dayton didn’t score in the first 5 minutes of the ball game and SLU scored 8 quick 2nd chance points to open up a 10-0 advantage to start the game. That has been a theme this year as well. SLU opned up an 18 point lead at 32-14 with 1:18 to go in the half. Dayton sprung together an 8-0 run to close the half and made the deficit a somewhat manageable 34-22. Cunningham had an And-1 and a dunk and a Dwayne Cohill corner 3 (It doesn’t mean much, but he was the only one who looked competent tonight).
Dayton would go on to make it interesting in the 2nd half! (for about 5 minutes). Mikesell scored his 7 points in quick fashion to help try and keep the game in check but as is custom with a Dayton basketball team, they went on a scoring drought for almost 5 minutes and that was the nail in the coffin for them. DJ Foreman for SLU was the Harewood trophy winner (I am assuming) as he finished 7-10 from the field for 18 points and 9 rebounds. Like I said, I wish there was more that I could describe to you about the happenings of this basketball game but quite frankly, this game was boring as shit to watch. Dayton-SLU games usually are borderline unwatchable. Take Time.
Dayton was absolutely annihilated on the glass:
The final tally of rebounds was 40-31, doesn’t seem so bad does it? Well, take in to account that 19 of SLU’s rebounds were on the OFFENSIVE END. Giving up 19 boards on the defensive end is such a bad job by everyone. Guy’s aren’t boxing out, guys aren’t hustling for rebounds and they are getting constantly out-hustled. St. Louis had 26 2nd chance points to Dayton’s 13, so there ya go. Doesn’t get more difference in the game then that.
Dayton was atrocious from the perimeter, again:
It is has happened before, it happened again tonight, and (spoiler alert) it’s gonna happen again down the road. Dayton was trash from the outside again tonight. Let’s break this thing down. Dayton finished with 60 points, 40 of which came in the paint. 11 came from the FT line, and 3, 3’s for 9 total points. So Dayton essentially made 3 jump shots on the evening. I don’t care who you are playing, you aren’t going to be beating anyone with an offensive performance like the one Dayton had tonight. Jordan Davis might as well have not gotten off the plane tonight because he was MIA. He was a team worst -21 (Cohill was the only positive player for Dayton, +9) Jalen Crutcher was 5-15 from the field (1-6 from 3) Dayton is going to be facing some of the more stout defensive teams in the league in Rhody, Davidson, and VCU and if the team keeps shooting like this, those games could ended terribly for the Flyers.
What happened to Josh Cunningham?
I don’t know what the hell is going on with JC. This guy should be a bona fide first team all-league player, even POY contender. But in the last several games, he has looked like he just wants the game to be over. He was the teams leading scorer but on a night like tonight that doesn’t mean a damn thing. Josh Cunningham had 1 defensive rebound tonight, 1!!!!! That simply can not happen from your big man, that is getting punked on box outs or not boxing out at all. I sincerely hope that Josh can figure out whatever the hell it is that is going on because if he is going to perform like he did tonight for the rest of the season, Dayton isn’t going to be doing anything of significant come A10 tourney time.
Okay, this was a pretty low-level recap from your boy, I’ll admit that. Like I said, this game wasn’t any fun to watch, or write about. Dayton has a lot stuff to figure out between now and Saturday. The Flyers travel to Kingston ‘mon and face off against the Rhody Rams. I think it is safe the say that this game on Saturday is of the utmost importance and hopefully (fingers crossed) the Flyers come out with some urgency and intensity on Saturday, Lord knows they are going to need it. I know that the content on the site has been all over the place the last couple of weeks, hopefully now, we are all on the same page and despite how the rest of the season may go, we will be there to cover it for all of you. Someone will have a recon for you later in the week. Until then, Ware Red, Be Lowd.
